Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney used a speech at the European Parliament to promote deeper cooperation with the European Union.

His appearance came a day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested Canada could become an associate member of the EU. Speaking Thursday, Carney outlined the benefits of closer cooperation between Canada and the bloc.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has already voiced opposition to the idea.

"I think it's laughable," Trump said. "Canada's been a terrible trade partner [...] And if they do that, if I think it's at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things."
