How Dangerous are Hiccups?

Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, a part of the body key to breathing, contracts suddenly. Typical triggers are food or beverages that are too hot or cold, spicy food, too much alcohol, emotional stress or a sudden change in temperature. Most of the time, hiccups are harmless, but in chronic cases, a doctor can prescribe drugs to help.
