How does DW promote the German language?
December 17, 2010Approximately 20 million people learn German as a second language around the world, making it one of the most popular languages.
DW not only offers high-quality journalistic content, but it is also a virtual classroom. Germany’s international broadcaster offers a range of different opportunities to learn German or to improve on existing German skills. These are all flexible with introductions in 30 languages.
A good example is “Mission Europe” a suspenseful thriller that is also available as a podcast for those who want to learn while on the go.
Since 2010, DW has also been offering a web-soap for German learners called “Jojo sucht das Glück”. The online format is targeted especially to the next generation of German enthusiasts.
DW developed this wide range of services with the help of partners like the Goethe-Institut and the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK). This platform has been created with content for both German students and for teachers.
In addition, Deutsche Welle promotes the German language with new initiatives, like the project “Sprache von Welt? - Streiten über Deutsch”, which presented the relevance and future of the German language as seen by representatives from culture, science, politics and media as well as German students and teachers.
