Iran has accused the United States of breaching the ceasefire, but the government has signaled that it remains open to talks. US President Donald Trump may be losing support for the war within his Republican Party.

Why did the United States carry out its latest strikes? And what do they mean for a potential Iran deal?

Thomas Juneau, a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, told DW that the core issue is Iran's strategy of building leverage, with the Strait of Hormuz at its center. That leaves key issues siuch as nuclear policy and sanctions sidelined for now.

DW's Ines Pohl reports that economic pressure and growing war fatigue are diminishing Republican support for US President Donald Trump's strategy.
