After decades of population decline, Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany is seeing a surprising turnaround. But as support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) grows, many fear the revival could be under threat.

Saxony-Anhalt, long marked by post-reunification depopulation, is seeing newcomers and returnees attracted by affordable housing, vacant spaces and strong community networks.

In Zeitz, residents like Anja Reissmann and Thomas Haberkorn are helping revive the town through local initiatives and cultural projects.

But many fear the rise of the far-right AfD, which could soon lead the state government. Researchers warn that far-right politics can deter skilled workers and migrants, raising concerns that the region's fragile comeback could be put at risk.
