How the war in the Middle East is upending Gaza's future

Six months into an unstable ceasefire, the situation in Gaza remains alarming. DW spoke with Palestinian political analyst Jaser Abu Mousa on how Hamas has been weakened and what the Iran war means for Gaza's future.

With the world focused on the future of the ceasefire in the Iran war, another ceasefire deal, the one agreed by Hamas and Israel in October 2025, is increasingly falling apart. Central issues include repeat Israeli violations, as well as the disarmament of Palestinian armed groups. In March 2026, the US-led Board of Peace High Representative for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov, laid out a plan for Palestinian armed groups in Gaza to decommission their weapons, linking compliance to the start of reconstruction following Israel’s military campaign which devastated the territory. In mid-April, Hamas, designated by the US and the EU as a terrorist organization, announced its rejection of the Board of Peace’s disarmament plan.
