Hydropower is clean and reliable, but big dams damage ecosystems. New small-scale tech offers the same no-emissions energy with less impact. We look at three: vortex plants, hydrokinetic turbines, and osmotic power.

In this episode of DW’s Planet A, Lukas Lottersberger explores a bold rethink of hydropower. The report lays out the downsides of giant dams — the flood zones, environmental disruption, community displacement. It asks, what if we could shrink hydropower without shrinking its impact? The video takes viewers on a tour of three innovative technologies—a swirling vortex turbine, sleek river-current “power buoys,” and osmotic-pressure systems—that promise low-footprint, low-emissions energy. Along the way, it touches on real-world tests, surprising punch-cards for wildlife, and glimpses into how these gadgets could slot into rivers and canals without reshaping landscapes.
