What if the sounds around you were making you sick? In Kampala, AI is mapping noise pollution to expose risks to sleep, health and the natural environment.

Kampala’s vibrant nightlife and busy streets come with a hidden cost: noise pollution. Using a network of solar-powered sensors, Uganda-based NGO Sunbird AI is mapping noise levels across the city and making the data publicly available. The findings show that traffic, human activity and businesses are driving noise levels above recommended limits in many areas. Experts warn that chronic noise exposure can contribute to stress, sleep disruption, hearing loss, high blood pressure and heart disease. The impact extends beyond humans, disturbing bats and other wildlife that play a vital role in controlling mosquito populations and supporting public health. Authorities are now using noise data to guide policies and raise awareness.
