The lungs supply the body with oxygen and remove CO₂. Vital gas exchange takes place in the alveoli. The brainstem constantly monitors CO₂ levels in the blood and adjusts breathing rate accordingly. At the same time, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems respond to emotional states: fear speeds up breathing, while a sense of safety slows it down. But can conscious breathing reverse this process? Slow, deep breaths are said to lower pulse and blood pressure, reduce stress, improve attention and fine motor skills, and promote restful sleep.
