HRW emphasises international concern over Myanmar

October 2, 2007

In Myanmar, U.N. envoy Ibrahim Gambari has met the top general Than Shwe in the junta's remote new capital, Naypyitaw in a bid to end the country's political crisis. The EU has tabled a resolution urging the 47-member UN Human Rights Council to "strongly condemn the continued violent repression of peaceful demonstrations in Myanmar," and to call for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.
