Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, women have been stripped of their rights to education, work and movement. Now the EU is inviting Taliban officials to Brussels. What message does that send to women?

The European Union is inviting Taliban officials to Brussels ― not to discuss women's rights, but to negotiate deportation deals.

Among the latest legislation passed by the Taliban government is the legalization of child marriage and the elimination of a minimum age for marriage in Afghanistan. While the law states that children who are married to abusive husbands can go to court once they reach puberty, there is no legal age for puberty.

Fereschta Abbasi, Afghanistan researcher at Human Rights Watch, talks to DW about what she thinks the EU's invitation says about Europe's priorities.
