Hungary suspends 'Pro-Orban' public broadcasts

Hungary's main public TV channel halted news broadcasts and aired an apology for years of alleged misinformation. The move is part of Prime Minister Peter Magyar's effort to dismantle Viktor Orban's state media system.

Hungary's main public television channel, M-ONE, suspended its news broadcasts with a black screen message. It read "Public media must not lie, and we apologize for doing so for so many years."

Restoring independence to Hungary's public broadcasters was a key campaign promise for prime minister Peter Magyar, who ousted Viktor Orban in a landslide election in April. DW spoke with journalist Marton Gergely about what the blackout means
