A stranded humpback whale is fighting for survival off Germany's Baltic coast. A weeks-long effort to guide it back to deeper, colder waters in the North Sea has been unsuccessful — to the dismay of locals and NGOs.

Hopes are fading for a young humpback whale stranded off Germany's Baltic coast, where onlookers are holding vigils as rescue efforts stall. The severely weakened animal, first spotted in early March and nicknamed Timmy or Hope, has failed to reach deeper waters despite repeated attempts by veterinarians and authorities. The dramatic case has sparked nationwide attention, emotional debate and questions over whether to continue trying to save the whale or focus on easing its suffering.
