A law introduced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine requires Russian citizens in Latvia to pass a basic language test. This mainly affected older residents who've lived in Latvia since the Soviet era. DW met one of them.

In Latvia, hundreds of elderly Russian passport holders face expulsion under new residency rules requiring a Latvian language test and security checks. Galina Nikolaeva (74) has lived in Riga for decades but failed to meet the requirements and was ordered to leave. While most affected residents passed the test or left voluntarily, many seniors struggle with written exams. Authorities say exemptions apply for those over 75, and decisions will be made case by case.
