Critics say this presents Hungary only as a victim of Nazi Germany and whitewashes its active collaboration in the mass deportations of Jews. The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is also coming under attack for his support of the controversial memorial. Just last year, the far-right Jobbik party sparked protests after it unveiled a statue commemorating wartime leader and Hitler-ally Miklos Horthy in central Budapest.
