I am fine but

April 27, 2026

A year spent as a volunteer in Berlin. For Angeli from Cameroon, this is the first big trip of his life. How does voluntary service in another country shape a young person?

Anyone in Germany can apply for what’s known as the ‘Federal Voluntary Service’. It’s a program enabling Germans to volunteer anywhere in the world.

Foreigners can also come to Germany. In 2019, the young Cameroonian Robincrusoe Angeli comes to Berlin as part of the same program.

With a small monthly allowance, Angeli does his best to get by. He works with the Grüne Liga, an environmental movement. But it's not always easy, in a city like Berlin. Making friends is difficult, and he’s plagued by homesickness.

The documentary sensitively examines how voluntary service affects Angeli. What is he learning about Germany, and what are Germans learning from him?

This is a film about falling down and getting back up, good intentions, and how we interact with one another.
