ID Afghanistan - Bundeswehr under scrutiny: Does the international strategy for Afghanistan need some re-thinking?

The criticism directed at the Bundeswehr troops who called in the airstrike is based on charges that they may not have paid enough attention to new NATO guidelines designed to prevent civilian casualties. The German commander says he was acting on intelligence that the Taliban were planning to use the hijacked trucks in an attack on his troops and that there were no civilians in the area. But critics question whether that intelligence was reliable. The incident has put a strain on Germany's relations with its NATO allies. And, it's raising questions about whether the international strategy for Afghanistan needs some re-thinking.
