In Italy, centenarians thrive on island of Sardinia

Sardinia is home to the highest proportion of centenarians in Europe. The reason? Good genes and nutrition, but also, a strong sense of community. The retirees are there for each other, even in old age.

In the remote mountain villages of Sardinia, many centenarians live vibrant, active lives. Sardinia is one of the world's few "blue zones," where longevity thrives thanks to strong community ties, healthy diets and resilient genetics.

Gerontologist Roberto Pili said the region's unique gene pool and lifestyle are key to healthy aging.
