In Spain, heat waves and dry soil fuel series of wildfires

Spain has seen almost 200 wildfires this summer. While arson is believed to be behind some of them, most are a clear indicator of the climate emergency, Spanish authorities say. Experts suggest that improving the soil's ability to retain water could help to prevent such disasters.

Wildfires are sweeping across northwestern Spain, engulfing villages and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

Spanish authorities have urged people to exercise caution and cooperate as extreme heat, strong winds and dry conditions persist.

However, experts warn: Without urgent climate action, such scenes could become commonplace.
