The Philippine island of Panay suffered severe damage as a result of last year’s Typhoon Haiyan. Although the storm left the ancient trees largely unscathed, younger forests and many agricultural areas were devastated.

For many decades, the ancient tropical forests have been subjected to uncontrolled logging. Local residents cleared forests to obtain land for agriculture.
