With bans on Chinese apps, support for domestic platforms and AI initiatives, India aims to reduce reliance on foreign tech. But building alternatives isn't easy.

India is pushing to reduce reliance on foreign tech through its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” strategy (self-reliant India), promoting homegrown apps and banning TikTok in 2020 over security concerns. While local platforms briefly gained ground, US rivals like Instagram and YouTube soon dominated again. Now, India is turning to artificial intelligence, aiming for technological sovereignty despite continued dependence on foreign infrastructure and models.
