Whether through self-defense classes or rap songs, women in India are pushing back against a patriarchal system. (Warning: This report contains graphic descriptions of sexual assault.)

Sexual violence and misogyny are part of everyday life for many women in India. But an increasing number are breaking their silence, fighting for respect and their rights with words, music and physical strength.

Activist Usha Vishwakarma trains women in the art of self-defense. Many members of her Red Brigade are victims of rape or other acts of sexual violence. Rapper JQueen channels her anger into powerful rap songs as a solo artist or with her all-female band Wild Wild Women.

These women represent a new generation pushing back against traditional gender roles, demanding respect and personal safety despite structural barriers and societal expectations. Their resistance shows that change begins when women empower themselves.
