Indonesia: Survivors recount abuse in mental health centers

Dewi, a woman with psychosocial disabilities, told DW that she survived torture and sexual violence in a mental health rehabilitation institution in Indonesia.

A report by the NGO Perhimpunan Jiwa Sehat (PJS) in Indonesia found that violence and inhumane treatment persist in psychiatric hospitals and social care institutions. The report cites weak government oversight and ongoing stigma against people with psychosocial disabilities as key factors driving the abuse.
