Indonesian authorities have declared a state of emergency as they struggle to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake on the island of Java.

The death toll from Saturday's quake has climbed to nearly 5,000, with an estimated 200,000 people rendered homeless. Hospitals remained inundated with injured survivors.
