More and more automakers are working to have cars communicate with other vehicles, traffic lights or smartphones. They say this can help drivers avoid traffic jams and prevent accidents. But critics fear that networked cars could be susceptible to attack by hackers.

Computer chips and intelligent auto electronics are meant to make driving safer. They can help drivers park, keep a safe distance between them and the car ahead, and even brake a vehicle automatically during an emergency. In the future, people should be able to sit back and let the car do the driving. But are these technologies really safe?
