In an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of German Unity, Wolfgang Schäuble, President of the Bundestag (parliament), speaks about the role of Germany and Europe in the world – not least in the rivalry with China, but also in the difficult relationships with the United States and Russia.

The politician of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who has been a Member of Parliament since 1972, analises the continuing differences between East and West in Germany, and between Eastern and Western states in Europe. He praises the role played by Angela Merkel, who grew up in East Germany, as Federal Chancellor – and looks positively into the future.
