The Argentine ant has become a worldwide plague, attacking established local ant populations. In Europe a number of native species have already disappeared. French biologists have been investigating what allows the invaders to distinguish between friend and foe. Their findings: The Argentine ant's sense of smell allows them to work together over large distances.
