Iran holds first elections since mass protests

Polling stations have opened in an election seen as a measure of public sentiment following mass protests that began in 2022. Authorities are hoping for a bigger turnout than in 2020 which saw the lowest turnout since the 1979 Islamic Revolution — but pundits expect that many will decide not to cast their vote.
