Iran is calling the shots on the global choke point that is the Strait of Hormuz. What would it actually take to force the narrow waterway open again? DW speaks to security analyst Megan Sutcliffe about the risks.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil routes, is effectively shut down, crippling global trade. Iran controls the narrow, shallow waterway, charging ships for safe passage and threatening them with drones, small attack boats and possible sea mines. The United States could escort vessels, but doing so would be costly and risky. Analysts like Megan Sutcliffe warn that reopening the strait quickly and safely is increasingly unlikely.
