The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil routes, is effectively shut down, crippling global trade. The United States could escort vessels, but doing so would be costly and risky. Analysts like Megan Sutcliffe warn that reopening the strait quickly and safely is increasingly unlikely.
