Ireland: Modern Emigration

More and more Irish people are heading overseas. During the economic boom of the 1990s, Ireland was seen as an attractive destination for foreign workers, but that time has passed.

Last year about 90,000 people emigrated, three times as many as ten years ago. Ireland's economic situation has improved in recent months, but many are still struggling to find work. In particular young men from rural areas are taking their job hunt beyond Ireland's borders. Favored destinations include Canada, as well as traditional ones like Britain and the US.
