The Irish government is attempting to steer the country out of the debt crisis with a program of drastic spending cuts, but to no avail: Ireland is heading toward recession.

Image: Mary Phelan So far, the Irish seem to have gritted their teeth and taken their medicine as if it were a just punishment for sins of the past, when taxes were cut even as public spending soared. But the new austerity has yet to bring any positive results. Unemployment has now reached 15 percent, and the numbers of the homeless are rising, as well. Inspired by the U.S. Occupy Movement, young Irish have begun occupying empty buildings. Many support them - even pensioners are taking to the streets.
