The exploitation of oil and gas have made Norway wealthy. But another resource could play a key role in solving future global challenges: algae.

Off the west coast of Norway, a startup is harvesting brown algae as a sustainable resource.

The fast-growing plants require no fertilizer and are collected after seven months using both manual labor and machinery. The seaweed is used in food products, including meat alternatives, as well as in textiles and packaging.

The European Union and researchers see strong potential, but production levels are still too low for uses such as biofuels.
