Residents of Beirut welcomed hours of reduced strikes on the Lebanese capital following a reportedly heated phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

Just hours after US President Donald Trump announced that, following a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to scale back fighting, Israel carried out strikes on targets in southern Lebanon, killing several people.

Residents of Beirut, however, voiced relief as Israel withdrew plans to intensify strikes on the Lebanese capital.

A truce in Lebanon is seen as pivotal to the protracted Iran-US peace talks topping Trump's agenda.
