Israel will indefinitely close the Allenby Bridge Crossing, which serves as the sole gateway between Jordan and the occupied West Bank,  Palestinian and Jordanian authorities said Tuesday.

"The chairman of the Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders, Mr Nazmi Muhanna, announced that the Israeli side has informed us of the closure of the Al-Karama crossing starting tomorrow, Wednesday ... until further notice, in both directions," the Palestinian borders authority said in a statement on Tuesday, in reference to the Allenby Crossing.

The Jordanian Public Security Directorate also said the bridge was being shut "to passenger and cargo traffic by the other side until further notice."

Israeli authorities did not immediately comment on the reports. Tuesday is a public holiday in Israel to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year celebration.

Allenby crossing largely closed since shooting

The Israeli Airports Authority, which operates the Allenby Bridge crossing, temporarily closed the bridge on Friday.

It came after a day after a truck driver delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza from Jordan opened fire and killed two Israeli military personnel who were manning the crossing.

The crossing was reopened on Sunday, before Israeli authorities closed it again hours later. Israeli authorities announced on Monday that the crossing was open again.

The Allenby Bridge Crossing, also known in Jordan as the King Hussein Bridge, is the only international gateway for Palestinians in the West Bank that does not require entering Israel.

Israel has occupied swaths of the West Bank since 1967.

Israel continues Gaza City offensive

On Tuesday, Palestinian medics said at least 18 people were killed as Israeli forces pushed deeper into Gaza City.

Tanks were seen in different suburbs of the city, and Israeli forces detonated explosive-laden vehicles in two suburbs that caused dozens of homes and roads to be destroyed.

Israeli military officials said about 640,000 people had fled the city, which was home to 1 million before the intensified military action.

A number of Western countries responded to Israel's latest assault in Gaza by recognizing the state of Palestine — including France, Canada, the UK, Australia and Belgium.

The Spanish government on Tuesday approved a full arms embargo on Israel that also bans the export of dual-use technologies and jet fuel that could be used for military purposes.
