ISS space walk

August 10, 2015

On Monday at 4:14 p.m. CEST, the doors of the International Space Station (ISS) have opened and Commander Gennady Padalka left the space station for maintenance work with cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko.

For more than six hours the two cosmonauts have upgraded hardware on the station's outside. Among other tasks, they retrieved an external experiment, replaced parts of an antenna and photographed the exterior of the Russian modules. This allows for later checks for possible damage by cosmic rays and particles. Padalka and Kornienko also cleaned a window that has been tainted by soot from rocket-engines over the years. NASA shared the plan for the space walk in a video:

Inside the ISS, the crew has been productive as well: they have harvested the first salad grown in space:

Those curious about the interior of the space station can now go on an excursion through the ISS from the comfort of their himes. Here is an interactive tour through the space station by ESA.
