Italian unions strike to protest new budget priorities

A national strike in Italy has disrupted public transport, schools and health services. The country's largest trade union says the Meloni government wants to spend too much on defense and not enough on public services.

Thousands of workers across Italy have staged a strike demanding higher wages and more investment in health and education. In Rome, protesters gathered at the Colosseum, criticizing the draft budget for failing to boost salaries or public services.

Anger has grown over plans to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP under NATO guidelines. Rail, postal and hospital services faced disruptions as unions urged lawmakers to prioritize social welfare over military funding.
