Italy: Difficult Mission

The European Union intends to track down refugees with a new Frontex mission. Several ships and helicopters are to patrol a 30-nautical-mile stretch of water off the coasts of Italy and Malta.

Operation Triton replaces the Italian coast guard's Mare Nostrum search and rescue mission on the Mediterranean Sea. Its scope is smaller, and its budget of 3 million euros a month is relatively modest. Human rights activists are already criticizing the operation, saying Triton will be used more to protect the EU's external borders than to rescue refugees in distress.
