A 3.3-kilometer (2-mile) suspension bridge is supposed to connect Sicily with mainland Italy. But authorities still haven't secured the funding needed for the project, and there's opposition from environmentalists and residents.

The Strait of Messina separates Sicily from mainland Italy. A plan to build the world's longest suspension bridge here promises faster travel and economic growth, but faces fierce opposition.

Critics warn of home demolitions, environmental damage to migratory birds and Mafia involvement. Supporters, led by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, tout billions in revenue and thousands of jobs. But the project remains stalled amid legal and ecological concerns.
