Liverpool fall to Manchester City in League Cup final

February 28, 2016

Losing any game on penalties is tough, no matter what. But for Jürgen Klopp, this was a first chance to take home silverware as Liverpool boss. With all that said, the former Dortmund coach took it remarkably well.

When it comes to places to play a final in England, Wembley is just not Jürgen Klopp's cup of tea.

In 2013, as head coach of Borussia Dortmund, he lost the Champions League final to Bayern Munich at Wembley, dashing his hopes of lifting Dortmund's first Champions League title since 1997.

And on Sunday, in his first chance to take home silverware as Liverpool head coach, Klopp's men fell to Manchester City in the most painful of ways: penalties.

Manchester City keeper Willy Caballero made three saves in the shoot out to win it for City, and following the contest Klopp almost found philosophical words in front of reporters in London.

On his decision to keep faith with keeper Caballero, meanwhile, City head coach Manuel Pellegrini said: "I'd rather lose the title than lose my word."

Pellegrini added: "A lot of media were waiting to criticize me if Willy makes a mistake. I had a lot of trust in Caballero. I am very pleased … because he deserved it."

"It's amazing," said Caballero, who had been preferred in goal to England goalkeeper Joe Hart having played throughout the competition. "It's been an emotional week and it's a great win and great for all the players," added the keeper.

Fernandinho put City ahead early in the second half with a shot that squeezed under Simon Mignolet but Philippe Coutinho equalized with seven minutes to go.

The victory is Manchester City's second League Cup trophy in three seasons.
