Taiwan-based scholar Chan Kin-man has visited Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai in detention and corresponded with him several times. Through objects linked to Lai, he reflects on the mogul's dramatic rise and fall.

Hong Kong pro-democracy mogul Jimmy Lai is nearing the end of his trial on collusion and sedition charges linked to the pro-democracy movement in the city and Lai's now-defunct tabloid Apple Daily.

The 78-year-old Lai, who was born in mainland China but holds British citizenship, may face life in prison.

His fate was also on the agenda of the recent meeting between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and China's Xi Jinping.
