Jobless Rate will Continue to Rise, say Experts

July 30, 2004
The number of people out of a job in July climbed by 92,000, according to new federal unemployment figures, supporting theories that the number of jobless in Germany is more likely to go up this year. The figures come after a month in which the number of people out of work dropped for the first time all year. Reacting on the new figures, experts said the drop was not the turning point many government politicians hoped it would have been. Economist Holger Schäfer told the Associated Press that overall jobless figures would decline only slightly this year to 4.35 million. Others have countered that prediction, saying the numbers would increase in the coming months.
