Journalist remains handed over

March 3, 2012

The bodies of two Western journalists killed in Syria have been handed over to embassy officials by the Syrian Red Crescent.

This is an undated image made available Wednesday Feb. 22, 2012 by the Sunday Times in London of journalist Marie Colvin. A French government spokeswoman on Wednesday identified two Western reporters killed in Syria as American war reporter Marie Colvin and French photojournalist Remi Ochlik . Colvin, from Oyster Bay, New York, had been a foreign correspondent for Britain's Sunday Times for two decades, reporting from the world's most dangerous places. She lost the sight in one eye in Sri Lanka in 2001 but did not let that deter her.

The bodies of the US journalist Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik were delivered to representatives from two different embassies on Saturday.

French ambassador Eric Chevalier received the remains of Ochlik, while a Polish diplomat took responsibility for Colvin's remains. Poland represents US interests in Syria.

Colvin and Ochlik were killed last month in the Baba Amr district of the city of Homs when a series of explosions and rockets struck a makeshift media center where several other journalists were based.
