Kahn Mulls Leaving Bayern Munich

June 1, 2004
A few days before the European Championship kicks off in Portugal, German team captain Oliver Kahn has expressed interest in switching Bayern Munich's goal for another. "If I had the chance to move to another top club, I'd have to do it in time for next season," Kahn told German newspaper Die Welt. According to the paper, the goalkeeper, who was named best player of the 2002 World Cup, has been talking to officials at Manchester United. FC Barcelona has also expressed interest in luring Kahn away from Germany, according to news reports. Bayern officials meanwhile countered the rumors by pointing to Kahn's contract. "He should check his contract -- it still runs until 2006," Bayern manager Uli Hoeness told Süddeutsche Zeitung. "If he has a problem, he should talk to us and not the press." Despite the contract, an appropriate transfer fee and replacement for Bayern could make Kahn's move possible nevertheless.
