Kash Kash - Without Feathers We Can’t Live
December 8, 2025
They are flying in the ancient pigeon game "Kash Hamam", forming unexpected connections among the inhabitants of Lebanon's scarred capital.
Director Lea Najja, who grew up in Beirut, takes us inside a country in turmoil with her 2022 debut documentary. Lebanon is ruled by a corrupt political elite.
There have been frequent protests against the government. And the city is still suffering from the aftermath of the massive 2020 port explosion.
Yet above the city's flat rooftops, people find comfort in a common bond: the ancient pigeon game "Kash Hamam."
Players send their flocks of pigeons soaring into the sky. Above the city’s labyrinthine streets, the birds circle and weave, while their owners try to lure other players’ pigeons into their loft. If they succeed, there’s Kash – and the victor can cut the pigeon’s feathers.
This visually stunning documentary follows three passionate pigeon fanciers and is a sensitive witness to a city in upheaval.
