The French finance minister Christine Lagarde has confirmed that she intends to run for the leadership of the International Monetary Fund. At a news conference in Paris on Wednesday, Lagarde said she had been encouraged by support from a number of countries. However, she may face opposition. The world's biggest emerging economic powers have issued a joint statement calling for an end to the tradition of appointing a European to head the IMF. No alternative candidate has been named.
