Mountains, lakes and vineyards as far as the eye can see: Lake Constance is full of contrasts. We take a small journey along the west side of the lake and visit Mainau island along the way to Meersburg.

The town of Konstanz is considered the unofficial capital of the region. Visitors docking at the town's harbor are greeted by the imposing 'Imperia' statue, the hallmark of Konstanz. In one hand the statue holds the emperor and in the other, the pope. During the 15th century, a new pope was selected here--the only time that honor has taken place in Germany. Because Konstanz lies close to the border with Switzerland, it was spared from bombing during World War II and remained largely untouched. The medieval old town is still intact today.

The Mainau ''Island of Flowers'' is one of the most popular destinations in the Lake Constance region. Count Lennart Bernadotte turned the wild park into a lush garden paradise during the 20th century. From spring through fall, the island boasts a stunning sea of flowers.

The picturesque town of Meersburg is located on the northern shore of Lake Constance. The uptown part of Meersburg is home to the 'Old Castle' that dates back to the 7th century, making it the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. The lower town part of Meersburg is made up of narrow, winding streets and breathtaking views of the water.
