Five of seven villagers who were trapped when a cave flooded in Laos one week ago have been found alive. But rescue divers now have to try to get them out and find the two men who are still missing.

Time is of the essence as the cave rescue operation progresses in Xaisomboun, Laos.

An expert cave diver talked to DW about the difficulties that lie ahead for rescue teams, who are facing extreme terrain and rising waters.

The incident is reminiscent of another dramatic rescue that happened back in 2018: A number of  boys from a football team were trapped in a cave in Thailand for more than two weeks before they were freed.
