Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has refused to resign. After 17 days of growing nationwide protests - Mubarak said he would hand over power, but that he would not leave office. Addressing the nation - he failed to meet protester demands that he step down immediately. Mubarak has in effect stepped aside, by handing over the reins of power to his deputy, Omar Suleiman, a former intelligence chief trusted by the US and Israel. But Protesters in Tahrir Square, waved their shoes in dismay at the speech - enraged by the fact that the president had not resigned.
