Leipzig is a hub of cultural and economic activity in the state of Saxony. The city is also famous for the key role it played in the peaceful revolution in East Germany in 1989. The Nikolaikirche, St. Nicholas Church, was the starting point of the Monday-night prayers that became the Monday Demonstrations, which culminated in the end of the communist regime, and the reunification of the country.
