June 25, 2021

While the Greek island of Lesbos struggles with an influx of refugees, camp conditions keep making negative headlines. But Evangelos Spanos gives migrants new hope through soccer.

About two dozen refugees train at Cosmos FC., their boss is Evangelos Spanos. Through his experience as coach and sports scientist, Spanos knows that hard work alone is not enough to achieve your goals: You need some talent, too.

Paul Asema Yongo is in his early 20s, hails from Cameroon, and can offer both, hard work and talent. And that's why new paths could now open up for him; he dreams of a career as a professional soccer player. That it would be the first step toward escaping poverty, leaving the refugee camps and working towards a secure existence.

Evangelos Spanos supports Yongo as best he can, but many neighbors are still hostile toward refugees.
